It’s My Space

In Creativity and Innovation on December 10, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Okay, let’s start by the general knowledge. What is Myspace? Myspace is a leading social entertainment destination powered by the passion of fans. Music, movie, celebs, TV, and games made social. And now I made Myspace as the case for the business framework studies.

So who is the market of Myspace? Myspace did not targeted the large segments, they divided the market into several niches segments. The segments are: group of people who love musics-movies-games, fans of artist/bands, and the artist/band itself. As a leading social entertainment, Myspace really stick to their positioning power. They offer various kind of original musics, movies, and games. You can highlighted that all of the data offered is original! Then how Myspace maintain the customer relationship? Myspace usually become the partner of music event that organized by some local/international communities. Myspace did not has the ‘real’ distributor’, they distributed their products by online. All of the maintenance activities done by the management. However the partners also able to publish their work at themselves, they are the administrators for their own accounts. Most of the costs are for maintenance website. And the revenues come from artist that publish their songs/movies and the users who subscribe the artists’ works (songs, movies, games, etc). But the users do not have to worry because the price for each music/movies/games relatively cheap, about $1-3 dollars. It’s cheaper than buying  the CD’s.

Mihaly’s Paradoxes

In Creativity and Innovation on December 6, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Do you know Mihaly Cziszentmihalyi? To be honest, I do not have any idea how to spell his last name . In short, Mihaly is the famous Hungarian psychologist. He is noted for his work in study of happiness and creativity. Mihaly formed 10 paradoxes of creative people, and with this piece of work  I will (try to) analyze more about his paradoxes.

He looks happy and funny, rite?

The 10 paradoxes of creative people

Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quite and at rest

Well I could not agree more! Those people must be active in their environment. They love to see more opportunities and wont it let go. They love to socialize and doing different things in each days. Their physical energy comes from the spectacular idea. But, behind those energetic activities, creative people also need a rest. when they are quite and at rest, it does not mean that their work stops at that moment. In their tranquility they still thinking, they are wondering how to make their idea comes true.

Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time

Creative people use their brain uniquely, they works are out of the box. Not all of people familiar and understand their work. Here is the naive needed, creative people have to smart in managing their ambition because not all of their ideas/works could be implemented in the real world. They have to synchronize their imagination with the real situation.

Creative people combine playfulness with disciplines, or responsibility and irresponsibility

Playfulness is an absolute things but for the ‘disciplines’ I think it is not literally, because creative people tend to be free. Sometimes they do not care with the disciplines, they prefer to break the rules in order to find some inspirations. Disciplines here, maybe, means the common things. Combine playfulness with the disciplines means that creative people always have their way to combine the common things with the new ideas.

Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality

Every ideas/works which come from creative people are based on their imagination and fantasy. they really good in dreaming. But dreaming is not enough. To be the real creative people they have to transform their imagination, fantasy, or dream become something real which is applicable for human being.

Creative people tend to be both extrovert and introvert

It is all about balance. Creative people love to socialize, doing a party with group might stimulate their ideas and the crowd would be inspirational. But people also need the-me-time, time when they do not have think about other people, time when they can fully appreciate their selves, and time when they could have romantic conversation with the little heart. This is needed to explore the other side of life which could be another inspiration for their works.

Creative people are humble and proud at the same time

Creative people should be proud of their works, but they also have to be humble at the same time. Nothing’s last forever, include creativity. Creative people should keep exploring the new ideas to produce something useful for the human being.

Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotype

Creative people seem does not care with gender differentiation. They tend to be liberal. They sure that there is no boundaries of gender role in terms of creativity.

Creative people are both rebellious and conservative

Creative people look rebellious because they love to break the rules. They tend to be different among common people, especially in appearance. Some creative people (read: artist) even did not care with their appearance. But in the other side, they know what they really want. they know the ‘value’ of their selves and works. They still considerate many things if it has relation with their value. In this part, they are conservatives.

Creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well

Creative people might be very passionate with their work, but they also have to be objective. Creative it is not a matter of good-and-bad, or true-and-false. Creativity is all about honesty. When you are objective and open minded, people will put their trust and like your works. Objectivity (and honesty) will be the added value.

Most creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffer and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment

Once again, creative people are different. They have their own way to solve problems. Several people will not understand their way,  and creative people sometimes called the odd. But if there is no pain well there is no gain. When creative people show their contribution through their works people will admire them. It’s more likely the Indonesian quote; Berakit-rakit ke hulu, berenang-renang ketepian. Bersakit-sakit dahulu, bersenang-senang kemudian.

Overall i agree to the 10 paradoxes of creative people. According to me, each of them (creative people) is unique. Since they are creative they will not have similar way to solve problems, even just a way. Being a different person (among the other) is good. You do not have to be afraid being called the odd, you should be proud because it means you are creative and unique!

open innovation and business model

In Creativity and Innovation on October 9, 2010 at 3:26 pm

in the latest post i asked you guys one simply yet confusing question -what is open innovation and open business model?- in these two days i frequently asked Mr. Google about these things then i found one video from Prof. Henry Chesbrough. He is a Professor from High School Business of  U.C Berkley and writer of Open Business book. In the video he talked about the differences between Close Innovation and Open Innovation. he also gave example of companies that use the open innovation model.

Close Innovation is the old model of innovation. In close innovation the idea was come from science and technology base, then take it to the market. this was very famous and success in the last decades. this model also called push model. But now, there are too much useful knowledge available in too many areas in all over the world. and what we need is open model.

Now we have the open innovation model. in the open innovation model there will be more pathways to idea for come in. the idea is not only come from internal but also external. and when idea taking to the market, some of them goes to company processes, and other goes to other processes like license or join venture to get to the market. in short, in open innovation model it much more coming in and much more coming out.

in the other hand, open business model represent the concept of doing business in transparent way by intimately integrating an ecosystem of participants, collaborating in public space. this approach claims to be for the benefit for all, not just one group or stakeholders. more over, open innovation and open business model create for the God sake. Here is the example of company which run the concept of open innovation and business model.

Intel is a company with great internal research and development division, but in addition they leveraging internal RnD with an extensive program to identify, recognize, and then transfer external ideas from technologies, universities, and start ups. and they bring lots of external staffs to complete their internal RnD. and the innovative one, they built platforms for others to built the pound and take advantages of their technology. so they tried to create an ecosystem around their technology.

what i got is when you are creative and seeking for business (making new business, perhaps) you have to implement this things. you don’t have to be afraid to join or use external source in order to develop the business, speak up and let the others know. when you make a good relation with the ecosystem, your business will become higher and more profitable. so, create an intimacy with the ecosystem! ciao.

big thanks for Mr. Goggle, Mrs. YouTube, and especially Prof. Henry Chesbrough.

crucial invention

In Creativity and Innovation on October 7, 2010 at 4:55 pm

whats’up? it almost midnight here, 11.32 pm. in this middle of night i just got a random thought when look at my BlackBerry. i thought that…. what if there is no hand phone in this world? i bet life must be so boring and flat.

so i start browsing and found out that the first hand phone was invented by Joel Engel and Richard Frankiel. the major function of hand phone, at first,  was for receiving and making calls but lately the function has been grown up following the invention of technology. In this new age, hand phone is being people’s prior necessity. they, actually ‘we’, bring hand phone whenever we go. we are not only using it for making calls but also sending email, listening music, taking picture, online messaging, browsing, etc. see? hand phone now-a-day is very functional and useful.

at latest decade, there were only two big companies that dominated the hand phone market, Nokia and Motorolla. but as the time goes by there are zillion new players that have their own strengths and features, for example is BlackBerry. i am one of BlackBerry users. BlackBerry provides me some fascinating yet easy-to-use features. one of the features is push mail service. you can put your email account at your hand phone, then it will synchronizing so whenever you get an email on your email account you can simply open and read it directly by your BlackBerry. is it cool?

people become more and more creative, i am sure several years a head hand phone will be more great, future technology will be awesome,  i guarantee. we, as the future generation, should be more creative to develop the future communication.

dazzle with new ideas

In Creativity and Innovation on August 30, 2010 at 2:39 pm

creativity and innovation are common words. in my opinion, creative equals to out-of-the-box and innovation is like existing something that not-so-familiar before. creativity and innovation, somehow, lead you to become successful. one of the most creative companies in the world is Facebook.

what makes Facebook as Facebook? the idea was just simple they wanna make something memorable, more than year book, and have some fun. Mark Zuckerberg along with his room mates, Chris Hughes and Dustin Moskovitz, started with Facemash. Facemash was an internal Harvard website but then it spread to other college.

later they change the name into Facebook. there’re a lot of criticism. Syiria and Iran have blocked this website. the success never come as easy as a-b-c, Mark and friends mixture some problems first but they didn’t afraid. they just found out another way to fix it up. so whenever you have big and out-of-the-box idea, do not feel afraid.

catch me at Facebook guys
